Boosters asked to endorse Monte 2020
Sept. 11, 2009
Members of the Montezuma Community Boosters were asked to endorse the Monte 2020 committee's vision for the future and community values during the Boosters' September meeting on Sept. 9 in Hometown Cafe.
School superintendent Dave Versteeg, representing the Monte 2020 committee, asked for the endorsement after presenting a compilation of data about the community gathered by the 2020 team.
Versteeg also asked members to choose some community needs to be responsible for.
The Boosters already have gone on record as taking responsibility for helping to retain and recruit health care professionals and working to attract new businesses and retailers to the community. Those two needs were the top two identified by the 2020 group's community survey.
Versteeg said the data gathered to date, in slide show form, can be viewed at www.monte2020.org.
In other business, Boosters treasurer Deb Ver Meer said the homecoming scarecrow contest for 2009 is under way. Rules and applications can be viewed on this website or on www.montezuma.org. They also can be picked up at Vannoy Chevrolet, Three Sisters Fabric and Fashion and at city hall. Homecoming is Oct. 2 and entrants will have until just about the end of September to fashion their scarecrows.
Ver Meer also said the Mother's Club is trying to determine how to continue to support the FFA Wayside Park, located south of Montezuma along U.S. 63. She said they have given the FFA chapter $200 a year to help maintain the park. She said now that kids under 18 are not allowed to mow the park, maintaining upkeep is difficult. She also said she wasn't sure how much use the park gets, although the club is attempting to monitor that.
Ron Hensel of Ron's Barber Shop was thanked for arranging to get "Slewgrass," a bluegrass band, to come to Montezuma and perform at the final Diamond Trail Cruise Night of the season. He said the group would like to return.
Doug Ver Meer noted that Montezuma needs some kind of a sign along U.S. 63 that points toward the business district.
Rev. Charles Klink reported that the Montezuma Ministerial Association is not sure about whether it can organize enough help to do the Christmas story event it had been talking about for the Dec. 5-6 weekend. He said the group also is talking about organizing a coffee shop.
The next meeting is planned for Oct. 14, also at Hometown Cafe.
