Pow-I-80 to host events in Montezuma
March 3, 2010

Montezuma will host several events sponosred by the Pow-I-80 Powehiek Iowa Development Group.

That's according to Deb Collum-Calderwood, executive director of the group, who attended the Montezuma Community Boosters' meeting on Wednesday, March 3, in Hometown Restaurant.

She said Pow-I-80's annual meeting will be held March 30 in the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Speaker will be Poweshiek County farmer and Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Lang.

A social media workshop, again sponsored by Pow-I-80, will be held Thursday, March 11, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Montezuma High school. The $18 registration fee includes a meal. Call 236-1626 to register or for information.

Pow-I-80 will sponsor a grant writing workship on Thursday, March 18, at 5:15 p.m. in the Grinnell Council Chambers.

The Boosters discussed the upcoming (March 9) Montezuma Area Business Expo. Club president Jo Ahrens said about 45 vendors are signed up, with more expected.

It was announced that an open house for the new Poweshiek County Public Safety Building at the south edge of Montezuma will be on Friday, March 12, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Pastor George Salnave of the Montezuma Ministerial Associaion said that a granite monument containing the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes will be erected this spring on property at First Presbyterian Church. He said a gift from Hazel Sig-Hester provided funding for the project.

Pastor Salnave noted that several of the Wednesday morning (7 a.m.) Lenten breakfasts remain at United Methodist Church. He said donations received at these events benefit the Ministerial Association.

It was announced that the Blue & White Athletic Boosters will donate about $1,200 toward banners recognizing past Montezuma league championships. The banners are to be placed on the north wall of the high school gym.

Marcia Christensen of the Montezuma Improvement Association said a grant application is being prepared that would designate downtown Montezuma as a historic district.

That topic led to some discussion about whether Montezuma could be marketed as an outdoors and historic area. "I think you're on to something here," said Collum-Calderwood.

J.O. Parker of the Poweshiek County CR said the paper would host an open house event on March 25 at Hometown Restaurant from 4 to 7 p.m. Editors and management will be on hand and there will be refreshments, he said.

The birthdays of Hazel Sig-Hester and Lorna Bryan were noted.

Pastor Salnave said a Passover demonstration wold take place during the 9:30 a.m. service at First Presbyterian Church on March 14.

Deb Ver Meer led brief discussion about the next Hometown Holiday event. She said a decorated Christmas tree event in downtown storefront windows went over well several years ago and might be tried again. She also said possibly a family night, including movies, popcorn and Santa, could be hosted at the Presbyterian Family Center.

The next Boosters meeting will be on April 7.
