Braves had bases covered in E-V win
Jan. 13, 2011

English Valleys played with some energy early, scored the first basket, and hung with Montezuma for about half of the first quarter on Friday evening, Jan. 13.

"But after those first few possessions, we responded, did a better job defensively, and played well on both ends of the floor," said Braves coach Derek Schulte.

Results: A lead of 46-17 by halftime and a final score of 67-27, sending the Bears down to their 10th straight defeat.

"Our guys played a fun, up-tempo game and played together," said Schulte, noting that 15 of Montezuma's 26 field goals were assisted.

"That's a sign were were playing together, moving the ball and finding the open man," Schulte said.

"I was excited about our 19 offensive rebounds," Schulte said.

Another reason for happiness: Just one Braves turnover through about two-and-one-half quarters of a fast-paced game. Montezuma, which played everyone, made just 5 on the night. The clock was continuous after Montezuma's lead reached 35 points early in the third quarter.

The Bears didn't have an answer for guard Stephen Vavroch's dribble drive. He scored 15 points in the first half and wound up with 22.

A dozen different Braves put points in the book.

Montezuma moved its record to 8-6 overall and to 7-5 in South Iowa Cedar League play. The Bears are 1-10 and 1-9.

Vavroch added 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals to his 22 points.

Forward Nathan Wheeler had an 8-point, 6-rebound game, while post Matt Armstrong had 8 points and 5 rebounds.

"It was a good, solid win heading into a tough week," said Schulte.

UP NEXT - The Braves host BGM on Tuesday and visit Lynnville-Sully on Friday. There's a chili supper prior to Tuesday's game, starting at 5 p.m., with proceeds going to After-Prom.

ROYALTY - Hoopsters Brady Losure and Alexis Ferguson were voted Winter Sports King and Queen by the students, with the coronation taking place after the boys' game.

WATCH IT! - at 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on Local Channel 3 with Keith Brake and Zach Price bringing home the action.
