Bears' quickness subdues the Braves, 46-31
Jan. 17, 2012
Does anyone out there have a antidote for toxic quickness?
The Montezuma Braves are in need after taking another hit, this time after being bitten by the BGM Bears.
BGM's quickness out front disrupted Montezuma's offense on Tuesday night and pave the way for a 46-31 victory on Montezuma's hardwood.
"Give them credit. They took us out of all we wanted to do," said Montezuma coach Derek Schulte. "Their athleticism and quickness were the reasons."
BGM's Kyle Gritsch and Spencer Gritsch played out front in a 2-3 zone defense that consistently forced Braves point guard Stephen Vavroch to drive or pass the ball deep into the wings. That made it difficult for the Braves to run their offense.
The Braves did try some short drives through the zone, but couldn't hit shots.
Vavroch and forward Nathan Wheeler, who average 27 points between them, got 10 in this game on 4-for-23 shooting.
Montezuma shot 22 percent from the field, which included 4-for-19 (21 percent) from three-point range.
"We didn't attack their zone in an efficient manner," Schulte said. "We did get some looks, but you've got to shoot better in order to beat a team like BGM."
Montezuma's own defense was reasonably stingy and kept the Braves in the hunt until about midway through the third quarter.
"Our half-court defense was OK, not great," Schulte said. "We forced them to take some contested jumpers."
But not every time. "They were aggressive, took it inside and drew fouls," Schulte said.
The Braves were whistled for 27 personals, to BGM's 15. The Bears made 20 of 37 free throw attempts.
"We've got to keep the ball out of the paint," Schulte said.
Montezuma posts Matt Armstrong and Zach Gibson were 6-for-12 from the field and gave the Braves some scoring presence inside. Wheeler had 11 rebounds.
"But we never got into a rhythm offensively to where we were confident," Schulte said.
Jake Flathers muscled and quicked his way to 15 points to lead BGM, which is 9-4 overall and 8-4 against the league.
Gibson's 9 were high for the Braves, who are 8-7 and 7-6.
