Do you really know what’s behind door #3?
Jan. 31, 2008
Do you want to trade what you have for cash?
Now, do you want to trade that cash for what’s behind door number one? Door number two? Or how about door number three?
Door number three? OK!
Maybe it’s a $25 gift certificate.
Maybe it’s a plunger.
(Nothing wrong with a plunger, especially if you’re in need of one!)
Participants in a Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle meeting played a version of the ‘70’s TV game show, “Let’s Make a Deal” during their meeting on Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Presbyterian Family Center.
Huddle leader John Bushong had brought in a set with three doors and had furnished the prizes. Participants brought something to the meeting that they were willing to part with in return.
Bushong acted as emcee and the game continued for a while, giving quite a few of the Montezuma High School students opportunities to make deals and trades.
Deals and trades were what this evening was all about.
After the game, Bushong asked the students if anyone had ever made a bad deal.
“There have been many, through history,” he said.
“In 1620, the Dutch bought Manhattan Island for $24 worth of beads and trinkets,” he said. “That didn’t sound like a good deal for the Native Americans who sold the island.”
“In 1867, the United States bought Alaska from the Russians for two cents an acre.”
“And in 1964, the Chicago Cubs, who needed pitching at the time, traded outfielder Lou Brock to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Ernie Broglio. Brock went on to gather over 3,000 hits in his career and is in the Hall of Fame. Broglio won just seven games for the Cubs.”
“We made trades every day,” Bushong said. “We call them choices.”
Bushong referred to a Bible story where one of the sons of Isaac, who was wealthy, gave up his inheritance for a bowl of soup.
“Don’t give up your inheritance for a bowl of soup,” Bushong told the students. “Don’t give up God’s forgiveness and grace for something worldly.”
“We can look around our school today and see people giving up eternity for something worldly,” Bushong said.
“I’m troubled by some of the things I know are happening,” he said. Why, even 30 years go you could buy drugs in the bathroom at our school.”
“I want you to experience the best in your life,” Bushong said. “Things like alcohol and drugs can keep you from having the best in your life. They can take you places you don’t want to go.”
“And college is tougher when you have a baby,” he said.
“I don’t want to preach at you,” Bushong said. “But I don’t want you to trade the best that God has for you for something that is worldly. Experience the best, now and in eternity.”
