Advantages add up to an Iowa Valley win
Feb. 5, 2010
MARENGO - The differences that favored Iowa Valley: Not as many reaches on defense, not as many fouls, and not quite as many turnovers.
The Tigers used those advantages and a strong third quarter to ease past Montezuma 45-37 in girls basketball action on Friday evening.
"They are a good team and took advantage of the mistakes we made like good teams do," said Montezuma coach Keith Sietstra. "But we really felt like it was us shooting ourselves in the foot tha allowed them that success."
Iowa Valley (13-6 SICL, 13-7 overall) led just 20-17 at halftime, but outscored the Bravettes 16-10 in the third quarter and took command of the game in the process.
But that control had been building.
Iowa Valley's quick-moving zone kept Montezuma scoring leaders Emily Long and Brittany Bryan off the board in the first half. But Bravettes forward Courtney Latcham worked the inside for seven points and guard Hilary Iverson hit for five as Montezuma stayed close.
"The girls responded just as they have all year to an early deficit and clawed themselves back into a brief lead late in the second quarter," Sietstra said. "But we struggled right out of the gates in the (third) quarter and that is what ultimately did us in."
The Bravettes (6-13, 7-13) showed a little more offensive patience and got Long going in the second half. She scored all 15 of her points after intermission.
But she was countered by quick forwards Gina Svare and Miranda Rathjen for the Tigers. Svare scored nine of her 17 points in the second half, while Rathjen used quick lefthanded moves to the rim in producing six of her 12.
The Bravettes had to manage foul problems. None fouled out, but Iverson, Long, Alexis Ferguson and Hope Kriegel each finished with four personals. Montezuma had 20 fouls called against it, to 11 by Iowa Valley. The Tigers shot 29 free throws, 22 more than Montezuma, and outscored the Bravettes 16-2 from the line.
Iowa Valley's 16 turnovers were five fewer than the total committed by Montezuma. While the Bravettes were making contact and being called for fouls, the Tigers were getting tips and deflections, which helped to disrupt Montezuma's offense, especially in the first half.
Latcham backed Long's 15 points with nine while Iverson hit for eight, including a pair of treys.
"I couldn't be more proud ofhow these girls continue game after game to respond to situations where a lot of teams would shut down," the coach said.
