Bravettes had answers for BGM's treys
Jan. 17, 2012
Three-point baskets can hang heavy on an opposing team.
BGM put eight treys on Montezuma's girls - in just 12 tries - during their Tuesday evening, Jan. 17 game.
"But when they'd hit a three, we'd come right back," said Bravettes coach Keith Sietstra.
Montezuma hung in there, then used dribble drive penetration to pull away in the fourth quarter of a 46-37 win over the Bears.
"It has been a long time since I've seen a team shoot threes like that," said Sietstra. "But we were able to get good looks inside late in the game."
BGM was just 6-for-33 from inside the arc, and 1-for-10 from the free throw line.
Montezuma's own defense was pretty active. And that helped to key a late spurt on offense.
"During our first 10 games, we played more up-tempo, got into transition and created excitement," Sietstra said. "Those things made a difference in this game."
"We told the girls at halftime that if we could get into the lane and turn the corner, we can get good looks," the coach said.
That, the Bravettes did.
Post player Brynna Steele scored 15 points, with 10 coming in the second half. Post Emily Long had 14 and scored throughout the contest. She added 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots.
Forward Alexis Ferguson scored 6 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and had 5 steals.
Montezuma led 14-12 at halftime and 29-27 through three quarters before pulling away with a 17-10 fourth quarter.
Guards Carly Steele, Aly James and Mackenzie James gave Montezuma some smoothness in the open court with their ballhandling. Carly Steele had 6 assists and 6 points.
Forward Courtney Petersen gave the Bravettes a pair of important field goals during the first half.
Brittany Hohensee hit 4 of BGM's 8 three-pointers and scored 12 points. Abbie DeWitte scored 8 for the Bears, who fell to 4-11 overall and to 4-10 against league teams.
The Bravettes are 11-6 and 10-5 in the SICL.
"It was good to win," Sietstra said. "We were getting a little more comfortable pushing the ball."
