Girls to coach: 'Thanks for believing in us'
June 1, 2008
The awards had been handed out and positive statements by the dozen had been made.
Tyler Lown, Montezuma's girls track coach, was looking for the proper words to close the program - and move the group at the team's picnic into the food line.
The girls and parents did it for him.
"Coach, thanks for believing in us when no one else has," Dana Lowry said.
"You taught us to push ourselves," said Lindsey Sheets.
"When you move on into college and into life there is not always going to be a person to push you," Lown said. "You did it yourselves."
"Nevetheless, I think we should all thank coach Lown," said Dr. George Salnave.
And then it was time to eat and have some fun around the water at Bushong's Pond, located west of Montezuma, on a gorgeous Sunday evening.
Lown began the program with some thank-yous. "All of the parental support makes me want to stay here," the first-year coach said.
Lown thanked the school administration. "You allowed me a great deal of freedom doing what I felt was right for accomplishing our season goals," he said.
"Thanks also to the Bushongs for allowing us to have this gathering here," Lown said.
The coach thanked his assistants, Jeff Manary for his work with the throwers, and Ashley Reif for her work with the jumpers.
Lown then gave Keith Brake of www.clownsinowa.com a "Distinguished Service Award" plaque. "Keith gives positive support to the girls at meets and through publishing articles on his web site," Lown said. "He doesn't need a lot of thanks because he loves what he does. But thank him anyway."
"We had our first practice on Feb. 25th," Lown said. "It was a practice that tested the girls both physically and mentally."
"I thought I would die!" interjected Kaitlin Salnave.
"But to their credit, they came back the next day and worked harder," Lown said.
Lown had special recognition for Amber Kriegel, the team's only senior.
"We couldn't have been luckier than to have a senior like Amber," Lown said. "She lifted weights to get ready for the season, worked hard and remained positive, even through some injuries at the end of the season."
"Any success we have in the future is because of her," Lown said. "Because of her work ethic and positive attitude, I know she will be successful," the coach said.
"I think it was important to hold each other accountable," Kriegel said.
The coach awarded her a special team photo plaque.
Team members were given letter awards, medals for placing second in the SICL meet, and a booklet Lown compiled about the season, featuring statistics and stories. The cover design was by Cathe Wilson.
Also recognized were the team's state meet qualifers, the 4 x 100 relay squad of Courtney Latcham, Hilary Iverson, Kaitlin Salnave, Kaylee Doll and alternates Kiegan Sheets and Amber Kriegel.
