Gibson and Foubert lead charge at Highland

RIVERSIDE - Mitch Gibson at 132 pounds and Tyler Foubert at 145 led the way with third-place finishes as the TC-M wrestlers ran into some strong competition at the Gary Curtis Invitational at Highland High School on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Nine TC-M wrestlers in all placed in the top 8 of their respective weight classes.

Alburnett, the sixth-rated team in Class 1A, won the 11-team tourney with TC-M placing seventh.

Connor Johnston placed fourth for TC-M after having to default in the third-place bout at 220 pounds.

Travis Carruthers also grabbed a fourth at 152.

Foubert, rated second at 145 in the lastest ranking published by The Predicament, lost a 2-1 match to seventh-rated Grant Henderson of Alburnett in the semifinals. Henderson then lost 13-2 to sixth-rated Jake Slocum of West Branch in the title bout.

Gibson was pinned in 3:34 by eighth-ranked Colton Martin of Alburnett in the semis. Martin then dropped a 6-2 decision to fifth-rateed Jess Hahn of Highland in the finals. Gibson went onto capture third place when his opponent defaulted.

The field at 220 was strong as well, with Johnston, again rated second in the Jan. 5 poll, seventh-rated Derrick Miller of West Branch and Jay Pike of Solon, who is rated fifth in Class 2A.

Johnston won his opening match with a 59-second fall, but was pinned by Regina junior Daniel Gaffey in 3:37 in the semifinals. Johnston then defaulted to Pike in the third-place match.

Travis Carruthers battled his way into the third place match, where he was pinned by Zach Hoyle of Alburnett.
