MHS speech students compete at state

CEDAR RAPIDS - Six groups of Montezuma High School students were scheduled to compete Saturday at the state large group speech contest at Kennedy High School.
The groups were hoping for a rating of "one" - and beyond that, a rare invitation to the all-state large group contest on Feb. 19 at Iowa State University.
All of Montezuma's groups did receive ratings of "one."
It was learned Monday afternoon that one group - the ensemble acting presentation of "Star Spangled Girl" - was nominated for all-state. However, it was in the non-performing category, which means they will not be performing in Ames. Courtney Latcham, Spencer Roorda and Bryan Stanford are the performers.
Performing or not, being nominated is quite an honor.
There was a certain sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that came from Saturday's efforts, according to speech coach Liesl Roorda.
"We - the kids, coaches and audience members, came away from each of our performances feeling that we had accomplished all that we had set out to do," she said.
Roorda also noted that the conflict between the state contest and the sectional wrestling tournament turned out not to be a problem. "The kids involved with wrestling were in taped performances, so we just needed to have one live person at the judging," she said.
