Food Pantry eyes move, assesses needs
Jan. 7, 2012
Officials of the Montezuma Food Pantry are looking forward to their Jan. 23 move to facilities at Community Hope Church.
The Clothing Closet will remain at its downtown location on Main Street, where its offering of clothing will be expanded. The food pantry will move to Community Hope's fellowship building at 103 Circle Road, just north of Casey's General Store.
"To get to this facility, you take the first drive to the east off of Front Street, north of Irwin, and go to the second, or eastern, building," said Virgil Scott, who heads up the Food Pantry/Clothes Closet for the Montezuma Ministerial Association.
Scott said the operation just completed "another successful year in helping families and individuals who need a little extra assistance in this difficult economy," he said. "We are now helping between 150 and 170 families each month at the food pantry and at least as many with clothing and household items. This growth has caused us to outgrow our present facilities."
"The change will give us room to expand the clothing closet to better serve those who use this facility and room to store the food and personal care items by those who come in for food and other items at the new facility," Scott said.
Scott said the food pantry needs donations of non-perishable food and personal care iems as well as money to buy needed items that are not donated.
"Much of what is needed can be purchased at significantly lower cost through the Feeding America program," Scott said. "Almost all of our buying is done through them."
"We at the food pantry are humbled and honored by the support we have received over the years and beseech everyone to continue and maybe even increase this support," Scott said, "as we face new challenges into the future."
