'7 Project' coming on Sept. 10
Montezuma junior and senior high students will attend an all-school assembly presented by "The Seven Project" at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10. There will be an optional night event that evening at 7 p.m. in the gym. The day program will be secular in nature, organizers say, and will focus on character development and education. The evening program will have faith content and is being held in association with area churches.
Junior bowlers to sign up
Junior league bowlers will sign up between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Star Lanes. Youth between ages five and 18 may participate. League play starts Sept. 13. Call 623-5195 for more information.
Story time starts Sept. 12
Preschool story time at Montezuma Public Library begins Friday, Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m. The program is for children ages three through five.
Quilt Guild meets Sept. 9
Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets on Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Jackson Church of Christ. Visitors are encouraged to attend.
Church has a new youth pastor
Doug Cupples is the new youth pastor at First Presbyterian Church. Cupples, 36, is married and has three children. Cupples previously was youth pastor at Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton.
Local man named to Hall of Fame
Scott Christiansen of Montezuma has been named to the 2008 Academy of Model Aeronautics Hall of Fame. He is the sixth employee of Sig Manufacturing to earn this honor. Others are Hazel Sig-Hester, the late Glen Sigafoose, Maxey Hester, the late Claude McCullough and Mike Gretz. Christiansen, 65, is vice president for research and development at Sig.
Summer Nights is Sept. 9
The last Summer Nights event of the season on the courthouse square will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be silly scarecrow fun, face painting, games, a make-it and take-it project and a car show. North Skunk Sawmill & Market will do a farmer's market. The event will also feature the best lemonade stand on the square.

- Monday, Sept. 8 - Montezuma Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. in The Apple Basket. Poweshiek County Extension Council meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Extension Office.
- Wednesday, Sept. 11 - Community Boosters meet at 11:30 a.m. in The Apple Basket. Legion Auxiliary hosts coffee time at 1 p.m. in the Sunnyview Activity Room.
Barber Shop opened on Sept. 2
Ron's Barber Shop opened on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 114 South Third Street on the west side of the square. The shop will be open from 8 to 5 Tuesday through Friday and from 8 to noon on Saturday. Ron Hensel is the barber, and he will be offering haircuts, shampoos, hot-lather neck shaves for men and children's haircuts.
Fellowship time is Sept. 11
The next community fellowship time at Faith Christian Center will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. For transportation, call church secretaries Darla at 623-3275 or Rita at 623-5410. This program is sponsored by area churches.
Boosters meet Sept. 25
The next meeting of the Blue & White Athletic Booster Club will be Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the high school study hall.
Certain behaviors expected of students at games
Montezuma Community Schools students are expected to sit with their parents or in the stands during home football games. They are not to be under or behind the bleachers. Concession stand visits are asked to be limited to halftime so that everyone can watch the game. Also, no playground equipment is allowed at games.
Event for entrepreneurs set Sept. 16
If you are starting a small business or are thinking about it, you are being invited to join a statewide community of entrepreneurs called MyEntreNet. They're having an event, called "EntreBash," on Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Grinnell College Old Glove Factory, second floor, at 3rd and Broad in Grinnell. Participants will be able to exchange ideas and receive on-the-spot recommendations from a "business intake team." The idea is to discover solutions and next steps for your business. 50-Plus Club starts Sept. 17
The first meeting of the 50-Plus Club for the fall season is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 17 at First Presbyterian Church. It starts at noon with a free meal and usually includes a program. Anyone may attend, but you are encouraged to call the church to make a reservation so they know how many to prepare for. The 50-Plus Club is a Presbyterian Church outreach.
Walk against Lupus set Sept. 13
Iowa's annual walk for Lupus Now will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Gray's Lake in Des Moines. Keith and Linda Brake's daughter, Amber McDowell, was recently diagnosed with Lupus, a autoimmune disease that can damage skin, joints and organs. LuLu and LeRoy, the Kingdom Klowns of Iowa, will be making balloons at the walk. Donations are appreciated and can be made out to LFA, Iowa Capter, and sent to P.O. Box 13174, Des Moines, Iowa 50310 or given to Keith and Linda Brake. Put "Team McDowell" on your check. You can also solicit pledges and walk in the event. Band and choir being organized
A group of citizens is attempting to form an community band and a community choir in Montezuma. "Casual and fun," a news release advises. "In the spirit of a can-do community, let's form a community band and a community choir. We might not have a bubble machine (ala Lawrence Welk), but we sure can put together a band. Join up! 'Summer Nights' coming September 9th
The next in the series of "Summer Nights" events on the Montezuma courthouse square will be Tuesday, Sept. 9th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., weather permitting. An evening of family fun will feature games, a car show and a farmer's market by the North Skunk Sawmill & Market with other activities still being planned. Folks over 65 can get in free . . .
Residents age 65 and over in the Montezuma school district can watch Braves and Bravettes regular season athletic events for free if they have an "Orange Crush Card." The cards are available from Mary Jo in the high school office.
Food Pantry needs some help
Donations of food and money are needed by the Montezuma Food Pantry. Flooding of a warehouse in Waterloo that is a source of food for the Montezuma Food Pantry has helped to create a shortage of supplies locally. Donations, which are tax deductible, can be sent to P.O. Box 189, Montezuma, Iowa 50171. Food can be left at the Food Pantry during office hours or by contacting Virgil Scott at 623-2776.
Montezuma website gets an update
A website devoted to the Montezuma community has been given a new look. The site, www.montezuma.org, contains data and information about the city, along with stories about the Montezuma Community Boosters and the Montezuma Improvement Association. The site will be updated with fresh information on an ongoing basis and will include photos from community events. The project is a joint venture between Municipal Light & Power, the Montezuma Community Boosters and the Montezuma Improvement Association. Keith and Linda Brake of the Montezuma Community Boosters are providing updates to the site.
Money for fitness center being raised
Gifts or pledges to the fund can be made through the Montezuma Community Foundation, P.O. Box 321, Montezuma, IA 50171.
The Montezuma City Council has voted to form an alliance with the school on the project - the alliance between two public bodies is necessary before the grant can be applied for. The project was on hold for a while until this 28-E agreement could be finalized. It's in place now, and the drive is on.
